10 Trends for Christmas 2024
The leaves may still be clinging to the trees, but the festive decorations have started to creep into the shops. Is it time to start planning for Christmas?
Your first Christmas in a new home is especially exciting, and it gives you the chance to explore new decorative schemes. What are the main Christmas decor trends for 2024, and which will best suit you and your new home?
Dreaming of a Pink Christmas
There’s a surprising new colour in our Christmas palette this year: pink. Whether you want to go full-on Barbie or eighties-style neon, or prefer a pastel pink, this pretty shade is all the rage for Christmas 2024.
There’s a wide choice of pink artificial trees on offer, or simply add pink baubles to your natural tree to embrace this trend. Team hot pink with silver or pastels with white and hints of glitter. If you’d like to use a warmer tone, try blush pink with copper or embrace those lovely rose-gold shades.
A Retro Disco Christmas
If the term “maximalist” makes you shudder, look away now: the retro Christmas trend is anything but understated. The star of this particular show is the glitter ball. Mirrored baubles in multi-colours bring a fabulous sparkle to your decor, especially when teamed with colourful (and ideally flashing) fairy lights.
This fun seventies’ inspired theme looks like being the big thing this year, so ask older relatives to dust off their old tinsel and colourful baubles. Search out retro-themed ornaments such as platform boots and funky radios, then simply add Slade. It’s Chriiiiiistmaaaaaaaaaaaaas…
Winter Woodland Wonderland
The contemporary country aesthetic is still strong, with woodland animals like deer, foxes and hares providing a traditional focus for decorative schemes. Look out for wooden animal decorations alongside adorable touches like tiny teasel hedgehogs.
The winter woodland theme can easily be combined with natural decor (see below) for an authentic, rustic feel. Holly, ivy, pinecones and candles all add to this classically British Christmas decor theme.
Merry and Rainbow-Bright
We love those rainbow-coloured artificial trees that sprang up a few years ago, so we were delighted when we heard that the rainbow look is back for Christmas 2024. Have fun with colours this Christmas, bringing those glorious rainbow hues into your decorative scheme.
This is an especially fun theme if you have a young family; however, the rainbow brights theme can also have a more sophisticated feel. Think graduated colours, fused glass ornaments and retro-style coloured lights.
Upcycled Christmas Decorations
This year, many of us are wondering how to make our decorations more eco-friendly. You can buy responsibly sourced decorations or use natural materials (more about natural decor in a minute) or you can reuse and upcycle existing decorations and objects found around the house.
Buttons, bottle tops, even books can find an exciting second life as Christmas ornaments. If you’re handy with a needle, make tree decorations or bunting using the fabric from old clothes. Cut up old Christmas cards for 2-D baubles or repurpose old costume jewellery for the tree.
Natural Christmas Decor
Another way to have a more eco-friendly approach to Christmas is to use natural Christmas decor. Start gathering twigs, branches and pinecones earlier in the season, and store them somewhere warm and dry. You can buy biodegradable fake snow and eco-friendly metallic paint to decorate them with.
Embrace traditional Christmas decorations. For fragrant decorations, dry slices of orange in the oven and create bundles of cinnamon sticks with twine. Carefully drill tiny holes in walnuts for string and suspend them from your tree or twig display. Making salt dough decorations is a fun family activity, as is gathering shells and sea glass if you live near the coast.
Rich Metallics
Not sure whether to have a gold, silver or coppery theme this Christmas? Simply combine all three. One of the biggest Christmas decor trends for 2024 is to blend all the metallics for a shimmering, shining and show-stopping effect.
Choose baubles and other decorations in a mix of textures (shiny, matte, glittery) and use warm-coloured fairy lights and candles to enhance the rich shades. It’s a wonderfully opulent way to decorate your home, and we love the luxe look.
Cut Out for Christmas
Do you remember making paper chains at primary school? Home-made paper decorations are big this year: great value, great fun to make, and of course, great for the environment. Rediscover your childhood skills at making paper snowflakes, and get the whole family involved.
You don’t have to keep it to simple snowflakes and paper chains. Take a look at Pinterest for ideas and YouTube for techniques, and you’ll soon be snipping away at giant 3-D baubles, paper Christmas wreaths and cute little Christmas trees for table settings.
A Tropical Christmas Theme
If you love big, bold houseplants, you already have all the greenery you need for your Christmas displays. Tropical plants (gently) festooned with bright, citrus and acid-shade baubles is big for Christmas 2024, and can be a great way of tapping into your existing decor.
You can keep this theme quite minimal with a few simple additions to your houseplants or go all out for a Christmas-in-the-sun theme. Add fun extra touches such as lemon-shaped baubles, seashells and exotic birds like flamingos and parrots; and of course, serve a tropical cocktail or two.
A Folk Art Christmas
Last but not least, the European folk art feel is still a popular Christmas decor option. Think traditional German markets and Nordic-style design, with wooden ornaments of Christmas trees, snow-roofed houses and deer.
Red, green and gold are popular colours for this theme, alongside natural elements and hand-crafted pieces (this chimes well with paper decorations and woodland crafts). The perfect theme if you love a cosy Christmas. Just add fluffy Fair Isle socks and a mug of hot chocolate.
