National Bed Month 2025: Why a Good Bed is so Important
March 2025 is National Bed Month. What is it, and why are we celebrating our beds? We take a look at why a good bed is so important for our physical and mental health, along with tips for creating the perfect dreamy bedroom.
What is National Bed Month?
National Bed Month was started by the Sleep Council in the 1990s. The idea behind it was to raise awareness of the importance of sleep, and how a good bed is the foundation of a good night’s rest.
National Bed Month 2025 runs throughout March. It’s led by Bed Advice UK (part of the National Bed Federation) and The Sleep Charity (which merged with the Sleep Council), offering expert advice to help you enjoy the benefits of quality sleep.
We all know what we need to do to support our sleep. A warm bath, lavender scents, a good book, a regular routine, no screens, no caffeine… However, if we can’t get comfy at night, our excellent bedtime rituals are wasted. And the hero at the heart of a healthy sleep? Our bed, of course.

What’s the importance of beds for health?
We’ve all experienced a poor night’s sleep (new parents, we feel your pain) and know how hard it is to function the following day. Without a decent amount of sleep (around seven hours for adults, although we’re all a bit different), simple everyday tasks can seem so much harder. Long periods with little or broken sleep can cause problems with relationships, our work and social lives, and lead to low mood.
For most of us, any physical discomfort at night can keep us awake, and we all know what happens when we can’t get back to sleep. We toss and turn, we start to churn over negative thoughts in our heads, and we get caught in a vicious circle of wakefulness.
By ensuring we’re physically comfortable, our beds play an enormous role in making sure we can settle at night. Our spines are correctly aligned on the mattress and our weight is evenly supported. If you have a physical issue like a bad back, a good bed won’t cure this but it certainly will help you manage it.
Combined with “good sleep hygiene” (those healthy bedtime rituals we mentioned earlier), a comfortable bed can make all the difference. Lulled into sleep, we don’t have time for those negative thoughts and nighttime worries to invade our brains. We wake up seven hours later, feeling relaxed, refreshed and ready for the day.
There’s no other piece of furniture that takes care of our physical comfort and mental wellbeing as well as our bed does. It really is one of the most important purchases we make for our new home.
When do you need a new bed?
Ideally, we’d replace our bed or mattress before it starts to become a problem. The typical mattress lasts up to 8 years; however, top-quality ones can be guaranteed for 10 years or more.
Signs that you need a new bed or mattress include finding it increasingly difficult to get comfortable at night, the mattress sagging or feeling lumpy, and any squeaking or creaking sounds. An older mattress may also be discoloured, stained and (sorry) a bit smelly.
When you decide you need a new bed and/or mattress, try before you buy whenever possible. Comfort is subjective: while some of us prefer a firm mattress, others would rather sink into something softer. Then there’s the choice between memory foam, cooling gel and wool mattresses, and that’s before you even get into the frame versus divan debate!
Bedroom design for a good night’s sleep
The bed is the star of the show, but what else do we need for a dreamy night’s sleep? If you’re just moving into your new home, it’s a great opportunity to create a sleepy haven using these design tips.
- Choose a calm colour palette for the walls. Restful colours include muted blue, green and grey
- Opt for blackout blinds or curtains that block out any intrusive street lighting or early dawns
- Interior lighting should be warm rather than cool, with low-light options
- Clutter-free spaces are calmer. Plan your storage solutions
- However, it’s good to have everything you need to hand, so make sure you have bedside tables or shelves
- Ideally, your sleeping space should be between 16 and 20 degrees. Will you need a fan for the summer or extra throws for the colder season?
- Introduce relaxing scents like lavender, chamomile and jasmine. A diffuser is easier to manage in a bedroom than a candle or burner
Sleep Well!
This National Bed Month, think about how comfortable your bed and bedroom are. Do you look forward to sinking into your inviting nest at the end of every day, or do you find yourself tossing and turning as you try to get comfy?
The combination of a comfortable bed, a good bedtime routine and a calm, uncluttered bedroom is the sleep goal to aim for. Let’s all strive for this during National Bed Month 2025.
