Among the shops, the Cathedral and its gardens create a calmer, greener space: pause to sit among the flowers and trees, or take your coffee to Chelmsford’s own Central Park.
There’s a good selection of places to eat and drink in the city centre, with a wide choice of family-friendly spots. Head for the many nearby villages to find half-timbered pubs serving local produce and some excellent farm shops. For quick and easy shopping, Chelmsford has all the major supermarkets.
Good schools, green spaces, plenty of nearby attractions – Chelmsford is a good option if you’re moving with a young family. The almost-600-acre Hylands Park is worth the move alone, with its trails, playgrounds, gardens and Go Ape activities. There’s also a cafe, shops, studios and an events and tours programme. Perfect for kids, dogs and anyone who loves being outdoors.
The Call Of The Wild Zoo and All Things Alpaca are extremely popular with families, and in the summer, the sunflower farm at Writtle has to be one of the most beautiful places in Essex. Back in the city centre, there are museums and galleries, the Everyman Cinema in Bond Street and Chelmsford Theatre. Riverside Leisure Centre has everything you need for a rainy day.
Essex has the most wonderfully varied landscapes, from rolling hills to lowland heaths. If you love walking through ancient woodlands or along meandering river banks, you can spend many happy Sundays exploring the countryside around your new home (your dog will be delighted you moved to Chelmsford!).
The English county is also famous for its many postcard-pretty villages, most of which have inviting old inns for mid-walk refreshments. If you fancy a whole day out, it’s only just over 30 miles to the beautiful Essex coast with its lively seaside resorts. Head for Southend-on-Sea for its iconic pier, amusement park and bustling city centre.
It’s just 35 minutes from Chelmsford railway station into London Liverpool Street, making the Essex city a perfect home for commuters (or anyone who loves a day or night out in the capital!). Ipswich, Norwich and Colchester are also easy train rides away from Chelmsford.
In exciting transport news, Beaulieu Park railway station opens in 2026, the first new station on the Great Eastern Main Line for over a century. Regular trains will take passengers to London Liverpool Street in 40 minutes.
You’re also close to the A12, the M11 and the M25, and Stansted Airport is just 25 miles away. All this, plus all that beautiful countryside on your doorstep – Chelmsford is certainly a versatile place to live.
Families who are thinking of moving to Chelmsford will be pleased to hear that there’s a wide choice of primary schools in and around the city. Secondary education includes state, grammar and fee-paying schools. Some of these have attached sixth forms, or students might prefer moving onto Chelmsford College. For higher education, there’s the Anglia Ruskin University and Writtle University College, and the proximity to London opens up all sorts of opportunities for young people living in Chelmsford.
