With its old buildings and shady trees, Wickham Market village centre is a pretty place to shop and you can pick up most of your everyday essentials here. There are food shops (including a butchers), a post office, a pharmacy and a superb hardware store. Create a beautiful new garden with a few trips to Suffolk Plant Centre, just a mile away.
On a sunny day, find an outside table at Cafe 46 in the market square, or enjoy a traditional afternoon tea in the cosy Tea Pot Tea Rooms. There are Chinese and Indian restaurants (for dining in or out) as well as a traditional fish and chip shop.
If you’re fancying pub grub, there’s a choice of venues within three miles of Wickham Market, including the 14th-century Greyhound Inn in nearby Pettistree and the family-friendly White Horse in Easton. You’re also less than six miles from the port town of Woodbridge, where you’ll find a great choice of places to eat, drink and shop.
Wickham Market is set in the beautiful East Anglian countryside, just 12 miles from the Suffolk Heritage Coast and 14 miles from Ipswich.
Suffolk’s coastline stretches for 50 miles, taking in traditional seaside resorts, historic fishing ports and idyllic little villages along the way. It’s just 12 miles to lovely Aldeburgh and 13 to the beach at Thorpeness. Victorian Southwold, with its pier, prom and beach huts, is just over half an hour from Wickham Market. If you enjoy a coastal walk, you’ve definitely come to the right county.
Framlingham Castle (English Heritage) is seven miles away. Enjoy the views from the curtain walls and learn more about local history in the exhibition space. Orford Castle (also English Heritage) with its unusual polygonal keep, is about ten miles from the village.
The famous archaeological site of Sutton Hoo is also a short drive from Wickham Market. You can visit the Anglo Saxon royal burial site in the grounds of Tranmer House and see the astonishing finds in the High Hall Exhibition. As you’d expect from the National Trust, there’s also a shop and a welcoming cafe.
Woodbridge is the closest town to Wickham Market, less than fifteen minutes away by car. Ipswich is just half an hour away and it’s 34 miles to beautiful Bury St Edmunds. Cambridge is about 60 miles from Wickham Market.
Wickham Market railway station is two miles from the village in Campsea Ashe. It takes around half an hour to get to Ipswich, and from here you can catch the direct service to London Liverpool Street, which can take as little as an hour.
For younger families, there are plenty of nurseries in the area, and Wickham Market has its own primary school. Most older children attend Thomas Mills High School & Sixth Form in Framlingham, which is about six miles away. The University of Suffolk is a 30-minute drive away in Ipswich.
With nature reserves, beaches and woodlands all close at hand, Wickham Market is ideal for families who love exploring outdoors. The area is criss-crossed with footpaths and cycle trails, or book a hack from nearby Valley Farm Equestrian Leisure (don’t miss their Camargue Cafe). Enjoy the paths along the River Deben or take a picnic to Rendlesham Forest. Raining? There’s swimming and a gym at Deben Leisure Centre.
For days out, Easton Farm Park is a real family favourite. Meet the friendly farm animals, go on a ride through the park and let off some steam in the playground before having a well-earned rest in the Willow Barn Cafe. Look out for special events and bookable sessions, including goat yoga (yes, you did read that correctly) and exciting outdoor activities with East Coast Adventures.
