Smart Storage Solutions for Every Bedroom Space

The idea of a clean, calm and uncluttered bedroom appeals to us all. But where can we keep all our things in this beautiful, minimalist haven? We’ve gathered together some of our favourite bedroom storage solutions to help you create your perfect space.

Declutter Before You Organise

Before you start searching for wooden crates and hanging shelves, have a good decluttering session. It’s much easier to organise items when you know the volumes you’re dealing with.

Embrace the Power of Decluttering

Sort out clothes, accessories and items such as books into Need, Store and Recycle. If you’re getting ready to move into your newly built home, this is the perfect time to go through your possessions.

Clothes are a good example. Keep your frequently worn and favourite items, and sort out the garments you rarely wear but love into a pile to be stored or kept separately. Neatly fold those you don’t want into bags and take them to a clothing bank or charity shop.

Maximise Wall Space by Thinking Up, Not Out

When it comes to space-saving storage, the sky (well, ceiling) is the limit. Why waste limited floor space with a shelf unit when you can have a few stylish floating shelves above the bed?

Wall-Mounted Shelves and Cabinets

We love wall-mounted shelves, and they’re a great way of adding interest and displaying ornaments as well as providing practical storage. Mount bathroom cabinets above dressing tables and chests of drawers instead of conventional mirrors.

Space above the wardrobe just gathers dust and unwanted clutter. Choose freestanding or built-in designs that go right up to the ceiling, maximising space while minimising clutter.

Creative Options: Pegboards and Hanging Organisers

Don’t stop at floating shelves. Pegboards and hanging organisers make attractive and convenient storage solutions for smaller items, from hairbrushes to phone chargers. Choose fabrics and finishes to match your decor.

Hide It Under the Bed

We’re all guilty of hastily stuffing things under the bed to make our rooms look tidier! However, if you pause to organise your under-bed storage, you can actually fit a lot more under there…

Under-Bed Drawers, Bins, and Platform Beds with Storage

Some divans come with built-in drawers, which is a great way to store things like spare bedding. If you have a frame rather than a divan, you can buy large drawers on casters that wheel neatly under the bed.

As any parent knows, a cabin bed or high sleeper is the perfect way to maximise storage in the kids’ rooms. You can also get more “grown-up” style platform beds, which have drawers and cupboards underneath.

Optimise Wardrobe Space

Clothes spilling out? Try these solutions before buying a new wardrobe.

Hanging Shelves, Double Rails and Space-Saving Hangers

It’s all-too-easy to cram everything onto hangers, resulting in chaotic storage and a lot more ironing. After you’ve decided what to keep, reevaluate how space is used inside your wardrobe. If you have a lot of smaller items and things that don’t need hangers (gym kit for example), transform the way your wardrobe works with hanging shelves.

Double rails are a neat way to save space. Hanging shorter items like shirts and tops on a double row of shelves gives you twice the hanging space. You can also use space-saving hangers that take several garments at once.

Vacuum Storage Bags

Did your sort-out result in a pile of clothes that you rarely wear but can’t bear to part with? Try storing them safely and compactly in vacuum bags, which are easy to get hold of and hold a surprisingly large amount of items.

Small Space, Big Solutions

The bed has the largest footprint of any item of bedroom furniture, and this can leave you with fewer storage options in a smaller room. However, clever bed designs make the most of the bed’s size.

Ottomans with Storage, Headboards with Built-In Shelves

Ottoman beds have a large storage compartment under the mattress that lifts up on struts from the foot or one side. This is the perfect place to store bulky but infrequently used items like seasonal duvets and spare pillows.

We’ve mentioned platform beds for storage, and you can also find beds that have built-in shelves, either in the headboard or (in the case of single and day beds) along one side. Features such as integral lighting, charging ports and even TV lifts can help you save space around the room.

A Place for Everything, Not Just Your Clothes

Wardrobes and dressing rooms make it easy to sort, store and find your clothes. But what about all those smaller items like make-up and jewellery?

Decorative Baskets and Compartmental Boxes

Make a feature of your storage needs with decorative baskets, displayed on shelves or on top of the dressing table. As well as being safe ways to store smaller items, they can add colour, texture and style to your decor. Try wicker and jute for a contemporary country vibe or blush velvet for a more luxe look.

Old-fashioned sewing baskets are perfect because they have compartments for smaller items, which fold away neatly. Toolboxes have the same principle: maybe not as aesthetic, but fine for in-cupboard storage.

Storing Jewellery, Books and Everything Else

Cutlery tray-type compartments are perfect for storing items like cosmetics and costume jewellery. If you enjoy arranging things into pleasing groups, invest in some drawer dividers and compartment trays for your chest of drawers or bedside tables, and this could be the most satisfying task of the year.

Books are always best displayed on a shelf; however, sometimes our home libraries exceed our space! There are two solutions. You can “double row” your books if your shelves are deep enough, with the lesser-read volumes at the back. Alternatively, store some in a dry space like the loft in proper archival boxes. If you have a study in your new home, keep bedroom books down to a floating shelf or two and rotate your reading material.

Labelling Shelves and Containers for Easy Identification

The downside of most storage boxes is that they’re opaque. We love old-school storage boxes with label inserts, which have a real retro charm as well as practicality. Luggage labels and fabric gift tags also make charming identifiers.
